Luton marked the opening of the transfer window with the signing of defender Christ Makosso from Belgian side RWD Molenbeek.

The 20-year-old has signed for the Championship side for an undisclosed fee and signed a deal of undisclosed length at Kenilworth Road.

Makosso’s arrival was confirmed earlier today (01/01), with the Congolese international’s deal subject to international clearance and the deal making him Luton’s first signing of the January transfer window.

The move was not confirmed in time for the defender to feature against the Hatters against Norwich earlier today, but the paperwork is set to be completed by the time of their next game at QPR next Monday.

Makosso is the second defender in quick succession to join the Hatters, with the club having signed experienced Dutchman Erik Pieters on a free transfer last month, although Pieters is yet to make an appearance for the Bedfordshire club.

The defender had spent a year in Belgium with Molenbeek, having joined the club from French outfit Sochaux. Makosso made 23 appearances for the side from Belgium in his year with the club. He has also made 4 appearances with the Congo national team, including being called up for the team’s most recent international fixtures in November.

Luton boss Rob Edwards told the club’s official website that he was happy to see the deal completed to bring him to the club.

He said, “Christ is a young and really athletic defender who has caught the eye of the recruitment team, and we all think he’s got a really big future ahead of him.

“We’ll need some patience as he continues his development, but he’s an exciting young player who fits into the way we want to play going forward. We’re really looking forward to working with him.”

Makosso added, “I’m really excited to be joining Luton. I’ve seen so many positive stories about the club and the amazing fans. I can’t wait to meet my new team-mates and get working with them and the coaches.

“Everyone has made me feel welcome and I’m looking forward to being at Kenilworth Road for the first time to watch us tomorrow.”
