West Northamptonshire Council (WNC) has welcomed the outcome of the wide-ranging review, which is the first to take place for 10 years and sees changes to all electoral ward boundaries across the area.
The LGBCE’s conclusion must now be scrutinised and approved by Parliament before legally coming into force for the next WNC elections in 2025.
In their final report published today, the Commission has concluded that West Northants residents should be represented in the future by 76 councillors as the figure best facilitated a new warding pattern throughout the district. It means that from 2025 WNC councillors would be elected on a four-year term across 35 wards instead of the current 31 – comprising 13 three-councillor wards, 15 two-councillor wards, and seven single-councillor wards.
In response to residents’ feedback during the review, other recommended changes by the Commission include creating two single councillor wards in the north of Daventry and merging two of draft recommendation wards in the south-west of the area to form a two-councillor Middleton Cheney ward.
The final recommendations report and interactive mapping can be viewed on the LGBCE website.
We welcome today’s publication of the Boundary Commission’s final recommendations in the first review of electoral arrangements across our area for a decade.Cllr Suresh Patel, Chairman of the Council’s Democracy Standards Committee and the Local Boundary Review Working GroupTheir conclusions strike a fair balance in making sure the number of councillors and electoral ward patterns reflect the democratic needs of our residents and support our council more effectively in representing communities, delivering council business and providing efficient governance. I would like to thank everyone who took the time to get involved in this process and gave their feedback to the Commission.
Subject to parliamentary approval, these final recommendations will be put in place for the next WNC local elections in 2025 in and the run-up to polling day we will be ensuring that all residents are aware of how these new electoral arrangements will affect them.
The last electoral review in Northamptonshire took place in 2013 and WNC’s current electoral arrangements are based on those of the previous county council, with 93 councillors serving across 31 wards.
LGBCE launched the review in summer 2022, holding its review in two stages with public consultation, firstly looking at the number of councillors, and then looking at how many wards, and the names of those wards.

West Northamptonshire Council (WNC) are seeking residents’ views on renewing a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) in Northampton to help tackle nuisance and problem behaviour.
The current PSPO covering the Northampton Town area was introduced in 2020 in response to issues of anti-social behaviour which included drug use, street drinking and urinating in public places.
A PSPO is a power that allows councils to impose restrictions on a defined area to tackle problem behaviour under the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014.
It can deal with persistent and unreasonable nuisances and anti-social behaviour that has a negative effect on the quality of life for the local community in a particular area and intends to help ensure that members of the public and local communities can use and enjoy open areas and public spaces.
There is a legal requirement for the Council to have evidence to show the need for orders to be adopted, varied, or extended, therefore this consultation will be used to gather residents’ views on extending the PSPO for a further 3 years, up to September 2026.
The current Order prohibits:
- The use of intoxicating substances, including illegal or psychoactive substances
- Having an item in possession to use/take an intoxicating substance, this includes needles and smoking devices that are not e-cigarettes
- Consumption of alcohol in unauthorised or unlicensed open areas, for example on streets
- Urinating or defecating in public places, unless a toilet has been provided for that purpose
- Spitting
- Riding a bike or scooter when requested not to do so by the Police or a Council authorised person
- Busking when requested not to do so by the Police or a Council authorised person
- Failure to comply with the Order is subject to a fine.
The current Order also has provision for the control of dogs, however this has been removed from this renewal and is now covered under a separate Order. A full version of the updated PSPO can be viewed on the West Northamptonshire Council website
We welcome the views of all local people and businesses and I hope everyone who cares about Northampton will take the opportunity to give us their feedback as part of this consultation.Cllr David Smith, Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Engagement and Regulatory ServicesCreating safer communities with less anti-social behaviour is one of the Council’s top priorities and we hope that by renewing this Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) we can help deter nuisance behaviour and make Northampton a safer and more pleasant place to live, work, and visit for everyone.
The consultation opens today (2 August) and closes at midnight on Tuesday 12 September 2023. Anyone who would like to share their views about extending the Northampton Town PSPO can take part in the online survey via the Council’s Consultation Hub.

Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service is recruiting apprentice, full-time firefighters and is asking people from every community across Northamptonshire if they have got what it takes to join the county’s firefighters.
If you live in Northamptonshire and are interested in applying, the recruitment portal is open until midday on Monday 14 August. Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service particularly wants to attract people from diverse backgrounds and walks of life to apply and help ensure the county’s Fire Service truly represents the people it serves. It is also welcoming applications from wholetime firefighters from other services as well as on-call firefighters.
Firefighting is a rewarding career that involves so much more than fighting fires. As well as responding to incidents that range from road traffic collisions to search and rescue operations, firefighters work in the community with specialists and other partners to carry out prevention and protection work. Firefighters also play a vital role in community resilience in emergency situations such as flooding.
One of our latest wholetime recruits, Charlie Litchfield, joined the Service after last year’s recruitment campaign, and has loved his time here so far.
He said: “There’s not many workplace environments where you get to help people in this way. You can rescue people from burning buildings, but it’s also good to be getting out and about more in the community, visiting schools and things like that.
“The eight-week training period was hard, but I’d do it all over again. If anyone is thinking of applying this time around, all I would say is that joining the Fire Service is the best choice I’ve ever made.”
To be a trainee full-time firefighter, you must:
- live in Northamptonshire
- have a full car driving licence valid for the UK (with no more than 3 points)
- be able to permanently live and work in the UK without any restrictions
- be aged 18 years old at the start of the application process
Corby, Mereway, Daventry and Rushden Fire stations have been holding Have A Go days where anyone who has an interest in becoming a firefighter can try out their skills, and chat to serving firefighters about what it’s like to do the role for real. The next Have a Go day is being held at Rushden Fire Station on Friday 4 August. To register visit: Northamptonshire Fire & Rescue Service Events | Eventbrite
Kev Hardwick, Area Commander at Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “No two days are the same in the Fire Service. Whilst firefighting has been the primary function in the past, a modern fire and rescue service has a much wider remit, responding to a huge variety of incidents including road traffic collisions, water rescues and flooding. We also play a critical role in keeping the county safe, actively engaging with communities to help promote safety and prevent incidents before they happen.
“There are certain criteria that anyone interested in joining the fire service must meet, but ultimately if you live in the county, have the right attitude, determination and a desire to make a difference in the community you could become a firefighter. There is a list of essential criteria and more information about the fitness and strength tests on our website.
Please visit the Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service website for more information and a link to the online registration portal.
